The Worlds of ShadowFall

This page is going to be updated, extensively, so check back from time to time, to see if I've added anything new. I'll add the missing bits as I finish them, and am working on individual pages for more info on each of the planets. It may take me a while to finish them all, but I'll eventually do it! In the meantime, please pardon the blanks! (~-^)
The Alliance
The Colony Alliance is currently made up of four planetary governments (which are themselves federations of smaller internal governments --with the exception of Maragon): Exedra, Cassare, Farai and Maragon. The Alliance also protects the independent mining colonies, like Ardo, though they aren't truly members. There are about half a dozen of those communities, and each one is generally attached to one government or another. The colonies are not centered on the position of the Sol system. They're rather scattered around a fold in space (I follow the theory that space is a complex hyperbola), and were reached in generation ships. There's basically no contact between the colonies and Earth, and the colonies' technology lags behind Earth's in some ways, and is more advanced, in others. Travel between the colonies is done via wormholes. I call them "jump gates," though, because they aren't constantly open at a size large enough to admit a starship. It takes an enormous amount of energy to keep a 'hole open at that size, so mine are pilot-activated, sort of like runway lights on uncontrolled airports can be turned on or off or adjusted by incoming pilots. The gates are usually controlled by whichever colony they're closest to, and traffic through them is regulated closely, just like border gates are. The gates save a lot on energy, since using FTL drives is not necessary all the time.
Alliance Star Systems Map
A little explanation for some things on the map:

All the stars in this area were named by the Sahjmi, with the exception of Solara. Its original name was Kajien, but Humans renamed it after their ancestors' homestar. (It is, of course, not comparable to any real set of star systems in the Milky Way, as it's all fiction.)

The positions of planets to their stars are not actual positions. I've placed them far enough away from the stars to allow myself plenty of room for their names, and to show which starstations are attached to which planets. At this depth, the planet and starstation icons would be inside the star icons. ÊI couldn't stack all those names that close together, or the map would have been illegible and not much use for an overall picture of what is where. The positions of jumpgates, mass points, asteroid/planetoids and free-standing starstations (like Kharasi) are actual positions, relative to their homestars.

Second, the territories marked as belonging to Exedra and Cassare have nothing to do with their planetary orbits. These are only claimed mining areas and jumpgates within the larger Solaran area. The two governments share the primary Solaran jumpgate, and each has one of their own to oversee.

Another thing I might add is that Torin is MUCH farther away than it appears; at this point in the story's timeline, only the Jusonians and Maragonis have visited this alien area, because of the distance. The Human crew of Anidev Saschin's Angel's Fear pirate ship are the only Humans from Alliance space who have been in Torini space, and they only got there because their Kaipoori captain is capable of making that kind of a jump sequence while conscious and communicating with the Torini. If the map were three-dimensional, Torin's space would be far into the background, while Solara's would be right in our faces, with the others in this order, in between: Sanja, Fhars, Jiin and Severis, and a big gap between Severis and Torin. Off the map, in the viewer's direction, far, far down and leftward, is 51 Pegasi, and far beyond that, our own Sol System.
Exedra
Exedra is a terraformed planet, a bit smaller and denser than Earth, with a gravity force that's about 1.2 times that of the mother planet. Its government is officially known as the Greater Union of Exedra, and is a planet-wide federation of smaller, democratic republics. The first Exedran colonists lived in domes. The planet's O2 levels were cultivated over a period of about 200 years, through intense vegetation (Exedra is about 30% solid forest), and are maintained by constant forestation, though their ozone layer isn't as effective as Earth's. It was created in pieces, beneath a force field, in an effort to speed up the construction of the oxygen-rich atmosphere. Thus, the UV rays are vicious. The planet's shield offers some protection, but even so, sunscreen is in soap, shampoo, lotions, and even in the washroom water in metropolitan areas, and unless the sky is overcast, people do not go outside without sunglasses. The Exedrans are also extremely waste-conscious, and the fines for breaking the No-Waste laws are exhorbitant. First offense littering gets a fine of 5,000 Zo -- the equivalent of about $15,000 US dollars. Ocean littering fines are twice that. Exedra's oceans are smaller than Earth's -- none larger than our Indian Ocean -- but more numerous. Some are chained together; the blue area in the top right of the planet's image is an ocean chain. Very little mining is allowed onworld; most metals and minerals are obtained from asteroid mining colonies, such as Ardo. Exedra's primary exports include wood and plant products (sections of the dense forests have to be cleared occasionally to enhance new growth), electronics, spacecraft engines and pharmaceuticals. Overall, it's a nice, clean place to live, with an ethnic diversity that rivals Earth's and breathtakingly beautiful scenery. Although, the beautiful scenery was created by frequent and violent quakes. Exedra's current President is Rita Gutierrez.

Major Cities:

Edo--The world capital and most diverse and sophisticated of Exedran cities. It's located on the southeastern coast of the Meiji Republic. Its climate is semi-tropical. Edo boasts some of the best universities in the Alliance, which are responsible for the city's large student population. It's also an expensive city to live in, because of the population and lack of habitable land. The city is surrounded on three sides by dense, old-growth forest, on the fourth side by Kotaishi Harbor, and is crowned by the purple jags of the Ieyasu Mountains to the north. Genjiro and General Fuchida are both natives of Edo.

Rios--Situated on the southern continent in Palacia, Rios is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It lies in the heart of a rainforest; its many small rivers and mist-laden, silver waterfalls have earned it the nickname of the City of Mist. The trees, here, are giants, often reaching heights of 200 feet or more. Many of them grow in thick clusters, and their combined foliage creates large canopies high overhead, making much of the forest areas deep recesses of shadow. Rios is also the home of the Greater Union Army's main base, Fort Rios. The Intel headquarters are on this huge base (which dominates the area and provides work for the city residents, who would otherwise be left with only cottage industries). Ê

Other items of importance:

The space station Trinidad used to be in Exedra's geostationary orbit, opposite its slightly smaller sister station, Tobago. Twenty years prior to the current storyline, Trinidad was destroyed by the Kaipoori pirate, Axsher Saschin, in retaliation for an Alliance ambush on his family's ship. Tobago is currently the only active station in Exedran space.

Currency:

Exedra's monetary system is global, and the standard unit is the Zo. Alliance credits (which are the most common units used on space stations in Alliance space) are also accepted at most establishments. Most Exedrans carry cash cards, rather than physical cash or coin. People are generally suspicious of cash transactions, as most exchanges of cash occur in illegal trade. Some businesses will not accept cash.

Transportation:

Most of Exedra's private cars, buses and trains are maglevs. Their magnetic drives operate off of generating tracks that are buried in the roads. Offroad driving is tightly controlled, and requires a hard-to-get permit for a private citizen.

Private cars and buses also have distance sensors that provide information to onboard computers, which in turn control the speed of the vehicle to keep a safe buffer zone around the frame. Collisions are very rare, only occurring where there is a failure of the computer or sensors. All cars are autodrive, but have a manual control option--though the manual system will be overridden by the autodrive, if the sensors determine the car is violating another vehicle's buffer zone, veering off the road, or otherwise being operated in a dangerous fashion.

All city streets have crossovers for pedestrians, skaters and cyclists. Only maglev vehicles are allowed on the main road surfaces, due to the possibility of causing traffic backups. Most roads have a non-mag lane for motorcycles and maintenance vehicles.

Erosia
Erosia is also an Earth-like world, though it is a natural planet and doesn't have as much vegetation as Exedra has. It's Ilyana's homeworld, as well as Alex Davidov's. Erosia also has no planetary shield, so they are missing the "aura" that the Exedran image shows. This colony didn't start out as a "legal" (e.g, approved by the initial Colonization Board) colony. Its first government was set up by an Exedran ex-Governor and his followers, some 100 years prior to the current story. They're still in their "frontier" stage. The present empire grew out of this dictator's cult following. After being charged with corruption and perjury, he fled to then-unsettled Erosia. His supporters followed him, and brought along their families, as well as their useful skills. The original settlement numbered somewhere near 5,000 people. As Exedra had no authority to chase him into the wild territory, he was able to set up his government as an hereditary dynasty, without outside intervention. Erosia doesn't belong to the Colony Alliance, nor did they ever sign any of the original treaties, so they feel they are pretty much outside colony law. The present Emperor has just invaded Ardo, one of Exedra's primary offworld mining colonies, and this is partially why Exedra is interested in gathering intelligence, there.
Farai
Farai is a desert planet, with very little surface vegetation and most of its water deep underground. The cities are also deep underground and connected by peristaltic field tunnels. There's nothing on the surface except for spaceports, military facilities, air vents and mazeline (a native drug) farms. Oh yeah...and gigantic glass pyramids, which are used to direct light into the cities through mirrored shafts. Farai started out as an unapproved colony of religious cult members, but slowly gained legitimacy through stable government, and is now a member of the Colony Alliance. There are two major countries on the planet, Lemaan and Paralax, each adhering to a sect of the original cult and philosophically at odds with one another. Both are under the rule of an elected Queen in Lemaan. Lately, they've had a great deal of political strife, as the former patriarchal government of Paralax wants to regain power and autonomy, and secede from the empire. Erosia once invaded Farai, in an attempt to seize control of the then-enormously-profitable mazeline trade (and because the Emperor at the time was addicted to maze), but they found it impossible to control the fervent populace, who fought on after "defeat" with homemade weapons. Erosia destroyed all of Farai's surface military bases as they withdrew, and left the world in a shamble that it has only recently begun to recover from.
Cassare
Cassare is another natural planet. It is mostly wetlands, but they have no true open oceans. What water is visible on the surface appears to be green, because it's full of underwater plant life. Lots of photosynthesis going on there! Cassare is basically still in the "primeval swamp" stage of development, and it's an extremely lovely place, in that eerie, swampy kind of way. Unfortunately for the Cassareans, the swamps equal LOTS of insect life...though some of these are considered cuilinary delicacies. Their government is an hereditary monarchy, but is run like a democracy, with elections for all officials below the royal house. Cassare is one of the leaders in aviation and computer technology, and is politically a close ally of Exedra. Their military is one of the finest in the system.
Maragon
Maragon is an alien world, though they have an oxygen-rich atmosphere like Earth's, and the main population is humanoid. There are several sentient animal races, including the Flaetne, who are large, lemur-like beings, and the Kaipoori (for more info on the Kaipoori, click here), who are large felines. The planet appears white/blue because they are in the middle of an ice age, and most of the planet is covered with glaciers. A beautiful but uncomfortable place to live. The current single government for the world is an hereditary monarchy, run by the humanoid Tykharra family, but it was once comprised of many different kingdoms. Maragonis had a great fall, some 5,000 years ago, at the end of their Race Wars; this thrust them into a kind of dark age, and they've not fully regained the heights of technology they knew when the wars started. The Race Wars resulted when a certain tribe took it upon themselves to "seed" the universe, so that all primate type creatures would be genetically linked, thus creating a universal "family" the Maragonis could lay claim to. They were only foiled by the intervention of the Jusonians, who had their own ideas about seeding primitive races.
Juso
Juso is another alien world, and I've shown it in its true colors, rather than the color it would appear to the human eye, which would be more greenish. Its atmosphere is a mixture of ionized hydrogen and ionized oxygen, and there are two settlements on the planet: one at the north pole (which always faces the star) and the other at the south pole, on the dark side. Jusonians can't breathe oxygen, but as they are interdimensional creatures, they don't have to. The high families have more paranormal abilities than the common folk, and are the only ones who ever leave the planet. They claim to be the "true" seeders of the universe, and as the smallest of their adults is about 7 feet tall in human form --and physically and mentally powerful-- no one wants to argue with them about it. Their government is a patriarchal empire, and is thus subject to a plethora of intrigues and conspiracies among the ruling houses. The high families call themselves "Sahjmi," and also consider themselves to be the guardians of their "neighborhood" in space. They rarely intervene in the affairs of their human neighbors, but won't hesitate to do so, if they feel the neighborhood, at large, is in peril because of human actions.

You can also find some ongoing storylines involving Sahjmi and Drahkma, as well as individual character histories for some of them, in the ShadowFall RPG section of the forums, though registration is required to read the threads.
