The Japanese Imperial Calendar Traditionally, the Japanese number years according to the ascension of a new emperor, or tenno, to the throne. The tenno chooses a name by which he and his reign will be known, and which expresses the hopes he holds for the new era. Each successive year is then numbered and written after the name of the era, beginning with gannen, or "original year". Thus, 1989 is Heisei (name of era) gannen (original year); 1990 is Heisei ninen (year two of the Heisei era) and so on.
Heisei is the current era, and means "peaceful accomplishment," or "accomplishment of peace." Emperor Akihito chose this name after his father Hirohito's death on 7 January, 1989. "The Wings of Cranes and Eagles" takes place in the Showa or "radiant peace" era, during the reign of Hirohito, which began in 1926 and ended in 1988. The preceding tenno, Yoshihito, called his reign Taisho, or "great righteousness." The Taisho era began in 1912, and marks the beginning of the Modern Period in Japanese history.
