I've only included events for the first 19 years of Hirohito's reign, as these are the most relevant to the story told in "The Wings of Cranes and Eagles."

25 December...Death of Emperor Taisho and succession of Hirohito. The Showa Age begins.

1931
18 September...Japanese Kwantung Army seizes control of Manchuria.
1932
1 March...Creation of "Manchukuo."
15 May...Attempted coup d'etat by junior military officers ('May 15th Incident')
1933
27 March...Japan withdraws from League of Nations.
23 December...Birth of Crown Prince Akihito.
1936
26 February...Attempted coup d'etat by right-wing military elements ('February 26th Incident').

7 July...Outbreak of war between Japan and China ('Marco Polo Bridge Incident').
13 December...Japanese capture Nanking.
