"The Wings of Cranes and Eagles" is dedicated to my dearest friend, confidante, and Dragon Twin, Houlgate Davenport (Feb. 28, 1928 - May 12, 2000). I love you, Houlgate, with all my heart.

Friendship, flying and war... Tomiji Yoshida yearns to fly. He gets the opportunity of a lifetime when his father sends him to America to learn some discipline from a military uncle, and he makes friends with teenage pilot, Randall Parker. But before he earns his pilot's license, Tomiji's rebellious nature instead earns him a one-way ticket back to Japan. With his home country now on the brink of war, how can he save his dream of flight as well as his friendship with Randall?

Characters from "The Wings of Cranes and Eagles."

(in order of their appearance)
Tomiji

Tomiji "Tommy" Yoshida. Tomiji is small, but he has a fighter's spark in his eyes. Born in Japan, he has been sent to the USA to spend a year with his uncle, in the hope that he'll learn some discipline and manners. But he isn't interested in being an honorable warrior, like the Japanese samurai hero, Musashi Miyamoto; he'd rather be a flying cowboy, like Gary Cooper.
Randall Parker

Randall "Randy" Parker. Randall is an all-American boy: blond, athletic and fun loving. He's a clean-cut boy, the epitome of 1930's youth, a sort of softening of the wildness of the 1920's young. He's also an excellent pilot who is teaching Tomiji to fly. His greatest ambition is to be a barnstormer, and he wants Tomiji to be his flying partner.
Minoru Asai

Minoru Asai. Tomiji's Issei uncle. Minoru is 38 years old, and a bachelor. He won an honorary citizenship for his service in the U.S. Army in WWI, an honor which cost him his left arm. He now runs a small but prosperous grocery store in Little Tokyo.
Kiyoko Tani

Kiyoko Tani. Kiyoko is Tomiji's childhood best friend. She's fifteen, but Tomiji still refers to her as "Kiyoko chan," a diminuitive usually reserved for children. She's very much in love with Tomiji, but he doesn't realize it.
